The UK will start restricting access to online porn sites from 15th July 2019. The block is being introduced to try and ensure anyone under the age of 18 does not have access to adult content.

Of course, adults over the age of 18 can still access such content, but only if they can complete a rigorous identity check to prove their age. The website owners will be responsible for implementing these checks and those that do not could find their website being blocked or could face legal sanctions.

Not surprisingly, this has led to concern about privacy and the safety of information divulged in the verification process. Many people will remember the hacking of the Ashley Madison and Adult Friend Finder websites that accessed the personal details of millions of their customers. It remains to be seen exactly how websites will handle the verification process, how and where the data will be stored and how much personal information will have to be divulged. One thing is clear, this will not be a tick box exercise or simply entering your date of birth to assert you are over 18 - the user will need to upload sufficient data or documentary evidence to PROVE their age. That will almost certainly require enough information to personally identify everyone who applies.

Many online porn users would be very wary of giving so much personal information for fear that they may be ‘exposed’ at a later date. This may lead to a resurgence in more traditional sources of adult material such as DVD and adult magazines.
